I'm a Virtualbox user on my own systems, but my customer wanted to go with VMware because their IT would support it.
WINDOWS 8.1 HYPERTERMINAL INSTALL
I typically do not install these drivers on the host, only in the VM." (If you don't have drivers for it, it's not going to work). "1) If you're using a USB->Serial port adapter on the host, you'll need to install the drivers for this in the Win98 VM. If you don't have a "fast" host, then you may experience dropped characters in terminals with higher baud rates (I am able to run up to 921,600 baud without too much trouble). I primarily use TeraTerm Pro 4.90 in the VM's I've had better luck with 3.0 controllers with more modern OS's (Windows 98 might "like" 2.0 better).Ĥ) I use StarTech and GearMo USB->Serial everyday (both RS232 and RS422 converters), but I use them on a Windows 8.1 圆4 host running Workstation V11.1.3 (I won't use V12) and in VMs running Windows 8.1 圆4, LinuxMint 圆4 v17.2 and Win 7 x32. I've had much better success with USB devices if I set the VM's to version 10 hardware.ģ) You can try experimenting with setting the VM's USB host controller to 2.0 or 3.0. (This has worked for some devices for me).

You can also try just downgrading the VM's hardware to 10 and trying it. I've had better luck with USB passthrough on Workstation v11 than with v12. (you may have to downgrade the VM's hardware to version 10 first though before uninstalling v12). I typically do not install these drivers on the host, only in the VM.Ģ) If you do manage to get the drivers installed in the VM and it still doesn't work, you can try downgrading to Workstation 11.1.3 and give it a try.
WINDOWS 8.1 HYPERTERMINAL SERIAL
The Guest serial ports are mapped to fixed physical ports on the Host (aka StarTech 4 port USB to Serial) and are connected at startup.ġ) If you're using a USB->Serial port adapter on the host, you'll need to install the drivers for this in the Win98 VM. When I connect the one (or all 4) ports on the host (COM4-COM7) to the Windows 98 VM (COM1-COM4) I get nothing coming out of Hyperterminal on the Win98 Guest (as viewed on the second computer running Hyperterminal), and when I send characters from the 2nd computer I get the error message from the subject line above in a Host (Windows 7) error window. I have verified the serial ports work on the host (Win7) using Hyperterminal, a null modem cable, and a second computer. Using serial ports with WS 7.1.3 on Win7X64 "serial0: Unable to read from the "COM X" serial port: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress"

Ideally I will be using a StarTech 4-port USB to RS232 box to connect to 3 serial devices to the Win98 guest.įound these similar threads with no resolutions: I'm getting this error with VMware WS 12 Player running on a Windows 7 SP1 圆4 Host with a Windows 98 Guest.
